Registration Is a Requirement
The state of Florida requires all boats, excluding non-powered vessels under 16 feet, to be registered with the Tax Collector's Office. You have 30 days after purchase to register your boat and you must keep a copy of the Certificate of Registration onboard and available. A registration decal should be displayed on the left side of the boat, before or after the registration numbers and is renewed annually. This is a serious requirement and you will be stopped if you choose to operate a vessel without the appropriate registration.

You Can Be Arrested For Boating While Intoxicated
In many circles, it seems that boating and alcohol go hand in hand. And while it is not illegal to have alcoholic beverage on board, it's against Florida law to operate your boat while under the influence. The same physical sobriety tests or breath-alcohol tests apply to the water and if you are suspected of operating a vessel while intoxicated, you will be stopped. Currently, in Florida, you are considered intoxicated if your blood alcohol level is at or above .08. And of course, anyone under the legal drinking age of 21 found to be consuming alcohol will be in violation of Florida law as well.

If You Are Under 25, You Must Pass a Boater Safety Course Before
Operating a Vessel

Recent regulations make it a violation of Florida law to operate a boat under the age of 25 without passing an approved boater safety course. There are some exceptions, but in most cases, you will have to take the course. Currently, to operate a vessel powered by 10 or more horsepower, you must pass the course and carry a photo identification issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Florida Boat Insurance Is a Smart Strategy
While no one likes to think they'll be involved in a collision on the water, but boating accidents are fairly common in Florida. In fact, the state ranks number one in the nation for both numbers of registered pleasure crafts and- you guessed it- boating accidents. The truth is, even experienced boaters are at risk, particularly around the holidays, when the numbers of inexperienced boaters increase significantly.

Securing reliable Florida boat insurance is your best protection against damage to your vessel from another boater or damage you cause to another vessel or property. Choose your insurance carefully.
